What Does ‘Amo’ Mean? Exploring the Heart Behind Our Mission at Beyond Amo

In Spanish, “Amo” means “Love.” At Beyond Amo, love is at the center of our mission. And to us, Amo is more than a word or a feeling-state: it’s a declaration of purpose and a generative force that powers us to bring accessible tech literacy to our beloved communities. We believe that students have the best chance at success when they are supported by an entire community.

At Beyond Amo, we care about our students, educators, and families. To nurture a generation of learners, it’s crucial that parents and educators can effectively navigate what is at the center of modern life and education: technology. More simply, everyone deserves access to technological literacy in the digital age. This is the pulse of Beyond Amo, as we bring transformative tech education to schools and communities across New York City.

Our Beginning

Beyond Amo is a woman-owned, Latina-led organization rooted in the vibrant heart of NYC. Our founder is a passionate educator who started Beyond Amo with a clear goal: to close the tech education gap in historically underserved communities.

Too often, tech education can feel intimidating, condescending, or inaccessible. Beyond Amo was born from the belief that technology can be a force for good, and that everyone deserves to participate. We believe that tech education can (and should be) joyful, human, and rooted in cultural relevance.

In a post-pandemic world, students, schools, and communities were left with catching up to do. COVID-19 and its aftermath deeply hindered all forms of literacy. Accessible tech education builds resilience for both schools and their students. Importantly, students should know how to use technology to support their hands-on learning—not replace it. Now more than ever, our work at Beyond Amo is critical.

What We Do

Every day, we partner with schools across NYC to deliver high-impact programming that meets communities where they are. Our programming is flexible, expansive, and holistic. We work closely with schools and communities to make sure we support their unique and individual needs. We also make ourselves available in and outside of school hours, as well as virtually.

We do this work because we believe in learning without limits. No child, family, or educator should feel mystified by tech in 2025. Technology is moving quickly, and we empower the communities we serve to move with it.

Our programs are designed to go beyond traditional curriculum, surface-level tech training, and the barriers that too often stand between learners and opportunity. We don’t just want participants to complete a session—we want them to walk away feeling more capable, confident, and inspired to keep learning.

Why “Amo” Matters

In a world that often feels increasingly divided by income, access, and digital fluency, we choose to lead with love. Then we watch that love transform into digital competence for families across NYC and beyond.

To love something is to nurture it, challenge it, and believe in its growth. To love learning means being open to change, growth, and overcoming obstacles. To love our communities means investing deeply in their success.

New York City is an exceptional hub of multiplicity and diversity. In order to make a real impact across the city, Beyond Amo understands that effective programming requires a range of offerings and approaches.

Our mission is not just to teach, but to transform. We aim to create space for inclusive innovation, and to bridge the digital divide through programs that lead with empathy. Technology should be accessible for every learner from every background. At Beyond Amo, we believe that practical tech skills are fundamental, equalizing, and empowering.
